Another shell of a school in Gary, Indiana — tagged brilliantly and stripped down to the steel structure… In the Steel City, at least this holds up.
A new assignment has me organizing Riverboat Casino workers in Northwest Indiana and driving through Gary and its neighbors. Gary, named for a steel baron, rose on the backs of an organized working class until abandoned by employers looking elsewhere for easier exploitation. Now it falls, literally, brick by brick. What a privilege to work with fighters who could build something here again.

Over the past three months, I’ve had the joy of working with this team. They led a tremendous effort to strengthen our union as we adjust to the changing and often angering realities of healthcare. And they became one hilarious group of compadres along the way. So, here they are, laughing as usual: Fabiola, Abdel, Claudia, Lourdes, Jose and Maria.
